Cumbria Medical Service Ophthalmology is a community based eye care service that aims to provide care which can be accessed rapidly, is efficient, friendly and nearer to your home than traditional hospital services.
The service is run by experienced GP specialists supported by a nursing and admin team. We provide care for a broad range of eye conditions including minor surgery.
Medical staff keep abreast of developments in the field of ophthalmology by regularly attending courses and by working alongside hospital consultant colleagues.
We are proud to be an NHS organisation. Like other specialist services, referral into the service is through your GP.
What to expect at your consultation
Ophthalmology clinics are held either in community hospitals or in general practice surgeries where the required equipment is available.
Please bring with you your appointment letter and any eye drops and spectacles that you are currently using.
We aim to see you quickly and efficiently. It is rare to wait more than 20 minutes before being seen.
Please be aware that in order to examine your eyes fully the doctor may need to dilate your pupils with drops that can blur the vision for up to four hours. It is wise therefore to assume that you will not be able to drive yourself home and to make other transport arrangements.
The conditions that we see include:
- Lid Lesions e.g, Chalazion, cysts, papilloma
- Entropion (in-turning eyelid)
- Eyelash problems
- Watery Eyes
- Dry Eyes
- Corneal Abrasion
- Recurrent corneal erosion
- Flashes of light/floaters
- Dry age related macular degeneration
Diagnosis and treatment
We aim to give you a diagnosis and clear explanation of the condition and its management when we see you. Often printed leaflets about the condition are provided.
If your eye problem needs monitoring or treating, this will usually be done within the community eye service. Just occasionally referral in the hospital based eye service will be required for more specialised treatment or surgery.
Many eye conditions require monitoring over long periods and follow-up arrangements will be made when necessary. However, if you notice changes that concern you and you feel that you should be seen earlier than your planned review appointment, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will try to accommodate you into an earlier clinic.
